Self esteem and signs of stress

Signs of stress:

Stress can be seen as a product of how we see ourselves fit in with the world around us.

A poor self-view will most likely cause us to develop problems with stress-related disorders like depression, anxiety and anger.

It is very important to know who we and where we belong because this knowledge helps us develop a sense of safeness and purpose.

This goes a great way towards establishing self-acceptance.

Knowing who we are helps us in understanding how we fit in with the puzzle of this big wide world. It determines our tendency to gravitate towards bad signs of stress or away from it.

We can break free from bad experiences of stress by overcoming low self-esteem.

The Low Self-esteem Problem: Who am I? What am I worth? What do I want?

Self-esteem is a major driver in our experience of stress in so many ways.

Our sense of self determines if we live our lives just surviving (see the survival focused mindset), or if we spend our days seeking self-improvement and fulfillment (see improvement focused living).

Question: What’s the relationship between self-esteem and the signs of stress?

A good knowledge of our true self is a crucial factor in being able to adequately deal with stress and the signs of stress.

The main symptoms that point to the fact that we are undergoing too much bad stress are:

Irritability problems

Anger problems (see anger and fake high self-esteem).

Panic attacks

Anxiety/fear related problems

Low mood/depression-related problems

Overcoming low self-esteem can help greatly in the process of freeing ourselves from bad signs of stress.

However, we need to know who we are before we can overcome low self-esteem.

Who am I?

If I were to ask you the question “who are you?” What will you answer be? Well, you might probably answer by saying something along the lines of ... “my name is (readers name goes here)”.

Then I ask another question “are you really sure that is your name?” By this time, you are probably chuckling or becoming suspicious and thinking in your mind, “What does he mean am I sure that is my name. I hope this guy is alright.”

Then I ask yet another seemingly strange question, “who told you that this is your name?”

Now getting stressed, you conclude “Its official, this guy has gone cookoo in the head, Of course my Dad, mum, and older sister and brother told me (readers name goes here) is my name. I’ll show you my passport if you want proof. I’ll even show you my birth certificate if need be.”

As trivial as the question may sound, the above short skip is highly connected to how we come to an understanding of our sense of self.

You see, our knowledge of who we are, is mostly gained from the zillionths of information our brain gathers from the world around us.

You may have heard the story of the eagle who thought it was a chicken, having been hatched by a hen and living around other chicks.

The eagle could not even detect it was not a chicken, although it had grown bigger than its mother hen whilst the other chicks were still little in size.

Who can blame this eagle? It could only draw its conclusions from what it saw.

In the same way, we take our cues of who we are from the people, things and situations around us.

Our sense of self is tied to how we feel people around us treat us. This is especially true during our childhood. See the causes of low self-esteem to see how this works.
